Confronted with the choice, the American people would choose the policeman's truncheon over the anarchist's bomb
-Spiro T. Agnew

Spiro Agnew resigned following a no contest plea to tax evasion in his home state of Maryland. Totally unrelated to Watergate, but unfortunate since Nixon considered him his protection against impeachment.

Unlike the paranoid Nixon, who saw sinister forces at work in his demise, Spiro Agnew, an avid reader of Greek tragedies, took a fatalistic view of his fall from grace. He believed that he was not meant for public life, and did not give a single interview or lecture after his resignation up until his death.
